The very first Hanataba

How it Started

The story begins with Hanataba, a Swedish invention, despite its Japanese name which translates to ‘bouquet’.

The inspiration for this unique gadget came to Christian Jonasson nearly 20 years ago during a trip to Japan. While visiting a flower school, he noticed the distinct way the Japanese worked with flowers, different from the Western world. This observation sparked an idea in him - to create a tool or a technical solution that could bind a bouquet in a spiral without the need for the traditional abdominal technique.

Christian was intrigued by the concept of a tool from which the bouquet could be lifted, but the execution proved challenging. He envisioned a device with two levels or discs, each with several holes for the stems. A simple twist would create the desired spiral, but the question remained - how to remove the bouquet?

Years later, the answer came to him on a beautiful early summer day in a cottage outside Malmö. As he pondered over a coffee break, it dawned on him that the ‘bouquet moth’ didn’t need to be removed from the bouquet at all. Instead, it could be designed to become a part of the bouquet itself!

With this revelation, Christian immediately set to work in his storage room, creating what would become the first prototype of Hanataba. This was in May 2018.

Fast forward to January 2020, Hanataba made its debut at Formex in Stockholm, marking a significant milestone in its journey. And as they say, the rest is history.
